Goddess of Daylight Ceramic Art Plate

A hand-painted portrait forms the center of this ceramic art plate, surrounded by fine radiating lines and an iridescent metallic glaze. Pale details stand out against the dark ground, while shifting metallic tones bring light and movement to the composition.

Entirely handmade and hand-painted in Jingdezhen, the plate combines detailed illustration with a shallow, circular form. Closely spaced ridges extend across the rim, creating a rhythmic frame around the portrait and catching light along their edges.

The Design

The figure’s raised gaze and flowing hair draw attention toward the upper part of the composition. A pale, radiant circle behind the head echoes the lines of the outer rim, connecting the portrait to the surrounding surface.

Fine strokes describe the face, hair and clothing, while dark passages and pale accents give the image depth. The repeated outward lines lend the composition a luminous, expansive character.

“Goddess of Daylight” follows the maker’s title for the work.

The Glaze

The metallic glaze has an iridescent effect, revealing different tones as the viewing angle and light change. Pale, warm metallic and darker areas interact across the surface, so a single photograph captures only one view of its appearance.
