Gothic Portrait Hand-Carved & Hand-Painted Ceramic Art Plate

A solemn portrait emerges in black, white and gray at the center of this handmade ceramic art plate. The figure’s lowered gaze, ornate headdress and patterned veil give the composition a quiet intensity, framed by a wide black rim with a deeply textured surface.

Made in Jingdezhen, the plate combines hand carving with hand painting. Lines are carved into the ceramic body before glazing and firing, giving the central image a subtle relief quality. Fine marks and tonal shading build detail across the face, clothing and surrounding ground, while the glossy finish catches light across the worked surface.

Carved Texture & Portrait Detail

The outer rim is worked by hand into a dense field of small depressions and raised points. Larger rounded accents interrupt the finer texture, creating a pronounced granular surface around the portrait.

At the center, radiating elements above the headdress draw the eye toward the face. Intricate folds, ornamental details and closely worked shading invite a slower look. The carved lines and painted tones give the image both visual depth and a tactile dimension.

Its dark palette, solemn expression and richly ornamented composition evoke vintage Gothic imagery. Display the plate on a shelf, console or suitable plate stand where light can reveal the contrast between the detailed portrait and the textured rim.
