Dunhuang Mural: Thousand Hands & Bowls — Lacquered Ceramic Vase

In the Mogao Caves of Dunhuang, the "Thousand Hands and Bowls" composition has endured for over a thousand years — an image of boundless offering, hands multiplied to the horizon, each one holding a bowl. This vase carries that image forward.

Hand-painted in natural lacquer with tin and gold powder over a Jingdezhen-fired ceramic body, this is a work that sits at the intersection of two of China’s most revered craft traditions: the ceramic heritage of Jingdezhen and the ancient art of Chinese lacquerware. At Ø250 × H300mm, it commands presence in any space it occupies.

Each piece is made to order, unique, and signed by the artist. No two are identical — variations in colour depth, lacquer surface, and gold powder distribution are inherent to the process and part of what makes each work irreplaceable.

  • Material: Natural lacquer, Jingdezhen-fired ceramic, tin powder, gold powder
  • Construction: Paper body lacquerware — natural lacquer built over layers of paper and linen fabric
  • Dimensions: Ø250 × H300mm
  • Origin: Handcrafted by YQ Lacquer (乙漆), Guangzhou, China
  • Edition: Each piece is unique, made to order, and signed by the artist
  • Provenance: Inspired by the Dunhuang Mogao Caves murals, UNESCO World Heritage Site

This is not a reproduction. It is an original work — a living continuation of a tradition that has survived dynasties, wars, and centuries of change.
